Italy has cultivation areas which are particularly suited to the tomato because the climate and the terrain give the tomato its red colour. Interestingly, in Africa, tomatoes are white because the temperature is too high and prevents the formation of “lycopene”, which gives the red colour we are so used to seeing.. “Lycopene” is a powerful, natural anti-oxidant (www.lycocard.com ) and is found in higher quantities in preserved tomatoes than in fresh. “Lycopene” has recently been re-evaluated by nutritionists for this reason (www.tomatoandhealth.com ). Conserve Italia pays particular attention to the farming areas for its tomatoes. Its plants are also located close to these areas, like Pomposa (Ferrara) and Mesagne (Apulia) for example. Conserve Italia's main cultivation areas are found in the Provinces of Ferrara and Modena, in all of Emilia Romagna, the Tosco-Laziale Maremma area, Salento, and the Provinces of Parma, Piacenza, Basilicata and Foggia. Harvesting normally begins around 20/25 July and continues to 15 September, lasting approximately 40 days in the Centre-North and 50 days in the South. When the tomatoes arrive at the plants by truck they are checked and controlled before being placed in the automatic production selection system. This enables the products to be used in various lines of production. |

 | Since 2005, Conserve Italia has been marketing its tomato products with solely Italian produce (Solo Pomodoro Italiano – Only Italian Tomatoes) under the Cirio, De Rica and Valfrutta brands which have a seal of origin. |
